2006 Tire Rack SCCA Solo Nationals
By James Elterman (jelterman) @ 12:45 PM :: AutoX :: 0 Comments :: 1289 Views

2006 SCCA Solo Nationals LogoThe Tire Rack Solo National Championships is the place where the best in autocross gather each year to compete for the honor of becoming a National Champion. This is the event the ShimmySideways Team has been preparing for all year. Improving on last years 5th place finish in E Street Prepared proved to be a challenge for many reasons. First, the Rally Cars were no longer welcome to play with the Pony Cars in E Street Prepared, and were bumped to the faster B Street Prepared to take on the Corvette's, BMW M3's, and S2000's. Secondly, the 2006 National Championships were moved to a new location, Heartland Park. The surface, a one million square-foot asphalt pad, was created specifically to host the National Championships due to the seriously degraded concrete surface at Forbes Field, which has been the home of the National Championships for many years. The move to asphalt from concrete presents a steep learning curve to all competitors as asphalt offers much less grip than concrete. A third major challenge for the team was the lack of team owner James Elterman who was not able to attend the event due to the immanent birth of his first child.

Representing the ShimmySideways Team at the 2006 Nationals was familiar drivers Jeff Templeton and Martha Lou Haddon who have been preparing all year. Taking James' place was one of the St. Louis' Regions top drivers, Andy Hohl. Andy, an Evolution School Driving Instructor, is very familiar with the ShimmySideways STi as he has regularly taken the wheel to offer James advice or challenge his best time. On the first day of competition, the boys were greeted by cold dusty asphalt, as B Street Prepared was the first class to drive the West course. It is times like this where everyone fights for grip, and the rally cars take every advantage. After Day 1, Lancer Evo's had all three top spots, with Jeff and Andy in 11th and 14th respectively. Day two was again cool but the clean course offered more consistency between runs. Andy had an excellent drive on Day 2 and moved up to 10th, and Jeff remained at 11th. Meanwhile Martha Lou Haddon drove to a 6th place finish in B Street Prepared Ladies. The top spots in each class went to John Tak in the Showcase Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9 and Patty Tunnell in the BimmerHaus BMW respectively.

Slush Event Dries Up For Serious Fun!
By James Elterman (jelterman) @ 12:55 PM :: AutoX :: 0 Comments :: 1261 Views

The St. Louis Region's Event 7 was business as usual for the ShimmySideways Team, as Jeff, Andy, and Martha Lou worked together to fine tune their technique for the Solo Nationals. The morning rain during their runs was a reminder that rain is always a strong possibility at Nationals. The rain continued throughout their runs and offered excellent practice in the wet conditions. Unfortunately, the wet conditions dried up in the afternoon, creating a great handicap for the Team's finish on the index standings. Fortunately, none of the drivers at the top of the index standings were able to capitalize and Jeff Templeton remains at the top of the Index Standings. It is a close battle though with just a 13 point spread among the top 3 drivers. For video of one of Jeff's dramatic runs in the rain, visit our video page.

Just as the surface dried to reveal a clean course in the afternoon, a new driver took the wheel for some fun runs. Ben Ott, who is often considered the Chief Mechanic for the team and close personal friend of Team Owner James Elterman, took the wheel of the ShimmySideways STi for the first time at an autocross. Although Ben is not a regular competitor in motorsports events, he possesses a unique natural talent for driving. Within no time Ben found himself driving fast and posting very quick times. This is certainly attributed to his natural skill, but also to the ShimmySideways STi's excellent setup which offers a predictable and consistent driving experience. Check out the videos of Ben behind the wheel here.

Not content to let Ben have all the fun, James and Andy decided to take advantage of the dry conditions and have some fun runs. James and Andy had a dogfight for the fastest time, and Andy had the last word in the argument with a blistering fast run which trumped James' run by .2 seconds. Watch the intense side by side video to see how each driver gets the job done.

Templeton Pulls Hat Trick at St. Louis Regionals
By James Elterman (jelterman) @ 10:29 PM :: AutoX :: 0 Comments :: 1399 Views

With the St. Louis Regional Event 2 and 3 Overall Index Wins going to ShimmySideways driver Jeff Templeton, there was a good chance of a Hat Trick. But with over 110 drivers in attendance, no one was going to hand it to him.  Fortunately, Jeff and the ShimmySideways STi were in top form and he once again took the Overall Index Win and the B-Street Prepared class win.  This widens the gap further for Jeff at the top of the Index Standings.  Martha Lou Haddon also got behind the wheel and is showing great improvement and potential as a serious contender in the ladies class.  James Elterman did not compete but took some fun laps.

Videos of Jeff and James' best runs are available on the videos page.

Elterman Shimmy's to a Repeat Subaru Super Star Challenge Win
By James Elterman (jelterman) @ 10:23 PM :: AutoX :: 0 Comments :: 1410 Views

James Elterman takes Super Star Challenge Win: Photo Credit: PeatPicsThe ShimmySideways Team is always excited to attend the annual Great Lakes Region Subaru Challenge, formerly the Central Region Subaru Challenge.  This year was no exception.  This years' challenge took place once again at the infamous Lot L at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.  The event, which caters exclusively to Subaru enthusiasts, hosted nearly 50 competitors of various skill levels.  Some of the top drivers in attendance included 2005 Tire Rack Solo2 Nationals STU Class Champion Branden Burkhart, and ZZYZX Motorsports owner and driver, Steve Sulatycki.  James Elterman and the ShimmySideways STi of course returned this year in hopes of defending his 2005 Super Star Challenge win.  Event Chairman Steve Sulatycki prepared a fast and fun course and all competitors had 10 runs over the course of the day.  As the temperature increased over the course of the afternoon, James and Jeff struggled to keep the tire temperatures in check.  In the end, James found his 2nd consecutive Super Star Challenge Win by a narrow margin over Branden Burkhart and Jon Simmons.  In addition to the Index win, James and the ShimmySideways STi had the honor of having the Fastest Raw Time of the day.  Jeff just missed the Index podium with a 4th place finish, despite having the 2nd fastest raw time of the day.

You can view the In-Car video from the event on our videos page.  You'll also find a clip marked Shimmy, in which James experiences a ShimmySideways after hitting a bump at near the traction limit.  Photos from the event are available at PeatPics.  Official results from the event will be available soon at SubaruChallenge.com.

Templeton Repeats Regional Index Win
By James Elterman (jelterman) @ 10:01 PM :: AutoX :: 0 Comments :: 1378 Views
Jeff Templeton followed up his Overall Index Win at St. Louis Regional Event #2 with another at Event #3.  These two consecutive wins have launched Jeff to the front of the pack in the season standings for the Overall Index Championship.  It goes without saying that Jeff also took first in class.  Jeff was fortunate to take his runs in the early afternoon Heat 2 which was dry.  ShimmySideways Ladies class driver Martha Lou Haddon was not so fortunate, as rain poured down heavily for all of her Heat 3 runs.  Despite the rain, Martha Lou still took the B-Street Prepared Ladies win.  James Elterman did not take the wheel as he was busy serving as Event Chairman and Chief of Novices.

Half Shaft Failure at Peru ProSolo
By James Elterman (jelterman) @ 11:42 PM :: AutoX :: 0 Comments :: 1449 Views

Peru Pro 2006 : Photo by Chris HammondEach year the ShimmySideways Team finds great competition in Peru, Indiana.  This year the Peru National Tour was skipped in favor of the Peru ProSolo.  James and Jeff joined Aaron and Francis Miller with their Lancer Evo, and 2005 BSP ProSolo Champion Lee Piccione in the BimmerHaus BMW M3 to compete for the top spot in B Street Prepared.  Unlike the Walnut Ridge ProSolo earlier this season, James and Jeff found themselves running neck and neck with Lee Piccione at the top of the pack.  After the first day of competition, Lee was leading the class by a mere .010 margin over James.  Unfortunately, on just the second run of day two, a rear half shaft failed, taking the ShimmySideways STi out of competition.  In the end it was Aaron Miller who made a Sunday miracle and won the class with only one clean run on each side.  None the less, James' Saturday runs were worthy of 3rd place, with Jeff taking 4th.

For video of the half shaft failure, visit the video gallery.  For complete results, follow the jump.

Templeton Earns Overall Win at St. Louis Regional Event #2
By James Elterman (jelterman) @ 8:51 PM :: AutoX :: 0 Comments :: 1434 Views

The ShimmySideways Team was absent from the first St. Louis Regional of the year due to participation in another event out of town.  The St. Louis Regions second event of the year took place at Gateway International Raceway on a very warm Memorial Day.  James Elterman, Jeff Templeton, and Martha Lou Haddon all took turns behind the wheel.  Jeff Templeton attacked the course and not only took First in B-Street Prepared, but also took the Overall Index Win, quite a feat considering the field of over 160 drivers!  Martha Lou Haddon also took the uncontested win in B-Street Prepared Ladies.  James Elterman, who isn't competing at regional events in 2006, made some fun runs but did not find the time Jeff did.  Although the Team missed the first event of the year, Jeff Templeton is well on his way to a good season result on the index standings.

Video from the event is available in our videos section.

ProSolo Debut Amongst Pro Competition
By James Elterman (jelterman) @ 10:47 PM :: AutoX :: 0 Comments :: 1490 Views

B Street Prepared at the Walnut Ridge ProSoloThe ShimmySideways STi made its first ever appearance at a ProSolo recently at the Walnut Ridge ProSolo.  James found the best possible competition in B Street Prepared with former ProSolo National Champion Lee Piccione in the BimmerHaus BMW M3 and familiar competitors Joel Fehrman and Tommy Pulliam in the Knowledge Performance STi, aka Stompy.  The high skill level of the competition was evident as the 4 top drivers from BSP advanced to the Super Challenge.  Unfortunately James could not match the times put up by the rest of the class and did not make the Challenge.  Tommy Pulliam took the BSP win by a narrow margin.

Keeping James honest at the event was RX4Speed Racing's Matt Huntman who drove the ShimmySideways STi in Street Modified.  Matt found the time on course James was looking for with one half second faster laps on each course.  Matt's performance was worthy of the 2nd place SM trophy and he narrowly missed the opportunity to enter the Challenge.

Complete results are after the jump.  Three videos are available from the event; Tommy and Stompy in action, Two consecutive runs by James, and a James vs. Matt comparison on the right side course.  If you have never attended a ProSolo, the consecutive runs video will give you an idea of the fast pace of the event.  Check the video gallery for the videos.

2006 Season Debut with Best National Tour Result
By James Elterman (jelterman) @ 1:10 PM :: AutoX :: 0 Comments :: 1339 Views

Martha Lou Haddon at the Walnut Ridge NT: Photo by Chris HammondThe ShimmySideways Racing Team made its 2006 Season debut at the Walnut Ridge, Arkansas National Tour. Although the ShimmySideways STi is in a new class this year, James and Jeff found familiar competition in the class as Joel Fehrman and Tommy Pulliam made the trip from Atlanta with the infamous Stompy STi. Tommy had exceptional runs on both days and took home the BSP class win. James brought home the ShimmySideways STi's best National Tour result with a 2nd place trophy. Joel and Jeff took 3rd and 4th respectively.

Joining the ShimmySideways Team for the first time was former National Champion and St. Louis native, Martha Lou Haddon. Martha Lou raced the ShimmySideways STi in BSPL and earned an uncontested 1st Place. Martha Lou is expected to continue driving with the team throughout the season.

ShimmySideways STi is Fastest ESP Subaru at 2005 Solo2 Nationals
By James Elterman (jelterman) @ 10:13 PM :: AutoX :: 0 Comments :: 2402 Views
05 Nationals TrophyThe 2005 Tire Rack Solo2 Nationals was an amazing event and the ShimmySideways Team brought home their best finish ever.  The event took place at Forbes Field in Topeka, Kansas for the last time, and attracted over 1100 competitors from 47 states.  The competition in E-Street Prepared was intense.  It was a battle of Pony Cars versus Rally Cars.  The Pony Cars were immediately put at a disadvantage with a steady rain on Day 1 of competition.  After Day 1, all of the trophy spots were filled by Rally Cars.  On Day 2 the weather cleared up and standings were shaken up a bit.  In the end, it was the Showcase Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VIII piloted by Andrew Lieber and John Tak that stood on top.  The ShimmySideways STi, driven by James Elterman, was the fastest STi in the class, finishing 5th, his best performance at Nationals.  Co-driver Jeff Templeton fell victim to a cone count which was common on the South Course, which resulted in a 10th place finish just out of the trophies.  Photos from the event can be found in our gallery.  Continue reading after the jump for a break down of the event and complete results.

1-2 Index Win at Divisional Deja Vu
By James Elterman (jelterman) @ 12:42 PM :: AutoX :: 0 Comments :: 1566 Views
The 6th St. Louis Regional event of the year was at Gateway International Raceway and featured a course very similar to a course used earlier in the year for the 2nd Midwest Divisional.  The ShimmySideways STi continued its Index dominance, but for the first time it was a 1-2 Index finish.  James placed first on index and in class, and Jeff was second on index and in class.  The ShimmySideways STi was nearly the fastest car at the event, with only the Solo Performance Specialties CP Mustang piloted by Dave Whitworth posting a faster time.  Jeff's excellent finish at this event has earned him a spot in the top 3 in the index championship standings.  Full event results after the jump...

Jeff Tempeton Shimmy's to Index Victory in the Rain
By James Elterman (jelterman) @ 12:21 PM :: AutoX :: 0 Comments :: 1481 Views
The 5th St. Louis Regional of the year introduced rain for the first time this season.  With each racer acting as a meteorologist, it was anyones guess as to which heat would be the driest to run in.  Heat 1 turned out the be the worst, with a steady constant rain fall.  In Heat 2, the rain subsided but the course was still wet.  James Elterman took the course on slick tires on the wet course.  During Heat 3, the clouds were still lingering, but the rain never came, and Jeff Templeton took to the course.  Splashing through all the remaining puddles and shimmying sideways at every opportunity, Jeff managed some consistently fast runs worthy the the Fastest Indexed time of the Day and a more impressive Fastest Raw Time of the Day.  Jeff and James placed 1st and 2nd in class respectively.  Jeff's fantastic index finish at this event has placed him within striking distance of the top 3 drivers in the Index Championship.  Event results and a season standings update after the jump...

James Elterman wins Midwest Divisional Championship
By James Elterman (jelterman) @ 1:09 PM :: AutoX :: 0 Comments :: 1431 Views

Copyright Solo2.org / Chris HammondThe 5 race Midwest Divisional Championship has come to and end and the ShimmySideways Racing Team has finished on top.  The finale was conducted at Forbes Field in Topeka, Kansas, which is the home of the upcoming Solo2 Nationals.  Since this event is one of the rare chances each year to practice on the Nationals surface, the event often draws competitors from other regions.  The competition in E Street Prepared was very good.  Mark Jorgensen brought both his Cobra and STi, and former National Champion Mark Madarash brought his Trans-Am.  The racing was intense.  After the first day of competition, James Elterman had a 0.2 second advantage over Mark Jorgensen.  Although Mark was able to reduce this margin on day two to less than 0.1, it was ultimately cone trouble that prevented him from taking the win from James.  James and Jeff's performance in the series earned them 1st and 2nd in the Midwest Divisional Championship.  The excellent result in Topeka is exciting with the Tire Rack Solo2 Nationals right around the corner.  Compete results for the event and the series after the jump...

Stompy Wins Big at the Peru National Tour
By James Elterman (jelterman) @ 12:11 AM :: AutoX :: 0 Comments :: 1478 Views

Stompy! Photo Copyright Chris Hammond / Solo2.orgThe Peru National Tour is one of the best autocross events of the year, and this year was no exception.  In fact, it was the largest National Tour event ever with 398 competitors.  The competition is always terrific in Peru because many drivers are anxious to find out where they stand versus their competition with Nationals just around the corner.  We were anxious to catch up with Joel Fehrman and his STi named Stompy.  Stompy is likely the best prepared ESP STi in the country.  Combine this with Joel's excellent driving skills, and that of co-driver Tommy Pulliam, and you have a dangerous combination.  Amongst a field of some of the best ESP cars in the country, Tommy managed to beat the entire field by over two seconds over two days of competition.  Extremely impressive to say the least.  The ShimmySideways STi was the second fastest STi, with James and Jeff finishing 6th and 7th respectively.  James's 6th place was good enough to earn the final trophy spot, his second National Tour trophy this year.  Complete results after the jump...

Divisional Win Despite Cone Trouble and Car Trouble in Salina
By James Elterman (jelterman) @ 11:59 PM :: AutoX :: 0 Comments :: 1439 Views

Cones of Salina, Kansas; Be Afraid.  Be very afraid.  Because the autocrosses held in Salina, Kansas are notorious for high cone kills.  The narrow and long airstrip that the event is conducted on is one of the stickiest surfaces in the region.  The combination of the narrow lot and sticky surface makes for a very fast transition heavy course.  At this third divisional in the five divisional series, many classes were won and lost because of cone counts.  The ShimmySideways Team did not show any mercy to the cones.  Driver Jeff Templeton singlehandedly killed 20 cones over the course of the weekend.  Despite all the cone kills and even some brake fade issues, James and Jeff finished 1st and 2nd in class respectively for the two day event.  After this third event, James and Jeff have a comfortable lead in the R&S Racing and Solo Performance Specialties MiDiv Solo Series.  Complete results after the jump...

Super Star Challenge Win at Central Region Subaru Challenge
By James Elterman (jelterman) @ 12:28 PM :: AutoX :: 0 Comments :: 1423 Views
James Elterman wins Super Star ChallengeThe Central Region Subaru Challenge was a very important event for the ShimmySideways Racing Team.  The event, which is exclusive to Subaru's, attracts autocrossers from all over the Central region.  Jeff Templeton was unable to attend, so James called on former co-driver Reto Koradi to join him.  The event was held at the infamous Lot L outside of Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.  The lot is large and banked offering high speeds and both on and off camber turns.  The result of the event was a Super Star Challenge Win for James Elterman, followed by Steve Sulatycki in his Impreza RS, and Tim Miller in his Impreza WRX.  In addition to being the fastest car in indexed time, the ShimmySideways STi was also the fastest in raw time.

ShimmySideways STi and Idiot Savat Motorsports STiThe R&S Racing and Solo Performance Specialties Midiv Solo Series continued with the second event on Memorial Day weekend at Gateway International Raceway.  The ShimmySideways Team STi was debuting a new vinyl scheme thanks to Nukabe Automotive.  The scheme is identical to that which is used on Cusco's official race cars.  The turnout for ESP was light with only one other competitor, but otherwise the event had a record turn out of 160 cars!  James and Jeff won 1st and 2nd in class respectively, which ties James and Jeff in the series.  Although the index has no bearing in divisional events, James and Jeff also were at the top spots on the index standings.  Complete results after the jump...

2005 Midwest Divisional #1
By James Elterman (jelterman) @ 12:31 PM :: AutoX :: 0 Comments :: 1533 Views
Our first divisional event of the year was also the longest distance we will be traveling for a race this year, but it was well worth it.  The event was held in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.  Among the field of 8 drivers in ESP, the ShimmySideways STi came out on top.  The top three drivers were within only .8 seconds of each other after the two days of competition, and all were over 1.5 seconds faster than the rest of the class.  ESP again proved to be one of the fastest fendered classes of the weekend.  After the first day of racing, James led the class with Jeff only .2 seconds behind in 2nd.  On day 2, Jeff saved the best for last with an amazing run worthy of a top 5 index time.  James wasn't able to match it on his final run.  The final result was 1st in class for Jeff, and 2nd in class for James, with Mark Jorgensen in an STi just a half second back in 3rd.  Yes, Jorgensen in an STi.  Find out more and get the complete results after the jump.

What better way to start the season than with a National Tour!  We headed to Walnut Ridge, Arkansas to try out our new car setup amongst a field of some very fast drivers.  Jeff and I were very pleased with our results, finishing 3rd and 4th respectively behind Stranno and Jorgensen.  It is encouraging that our times indicate that we are steadily narrowing the gap between us and the leaders as our car develops.  Click read more for more details about the Walnut Ridge Event.

James and Jeff on HalloweenEvent 12 was a perfect way to end a great racing season.  I knew well in advance that Robert wouldn't be able to make it to this event, so I invited my friend Jeff Templeton to co-drive with me.  In the spirit of Halloween, Jeff and I wore costumes.  With our costumes on we felt much more at home competing in ESP.  I had the privilege of designing the course for this event; my second time this year.  It was our second cross over course in as many weeks.  The cross over allowed for good use of the site and some high speeds.  The highlight of the day was my fourth Index win of the season, and a 1,2,3, Subaru Impreza STi domination of the index standings; with Matt Huntman and Matt Grainger in 2nd and 3rd driving Huntman's SM prepared STi.  Special thanks to my friend Ben for joining us with his Firebird to remind us that American cars can shimmy too!

We didn't intend to bring the Shimmy Sideways Sti to Event #11.  Robert and I were planning to drive his Honda S2000.  A day before the event that plan was aborted when something came up for Robert which prevented him from coming to the event.  After a scramble to prepare the STi late Saturday night, I arrived at the race Sunday moring alone in my STi.  I was really glad I did too.  The crossover course designed by Richard Wiese was fast and fun, and the weather was great.  The course designer himself earned fastest time of the day indexed, and I earned 2nd.  In addition I also placed 1st in class.

Tire Rack 2004 SCCA Solo2 Nationals
By James Elterman (jelterman) @ 12:37 PM :: AutoX :: 0 Comments :: 1607 Views

The event we have been preparing for all year, The Tire Rack 2004 SCCA Solo2 Nationals, has finally come and gone.  The competition in E Street Prepared was very good as we expected.  Unfortunately we were not able to get the result we wanted due to a mechanical failure.  Because of the failure we were not able to complete our runs on the second day of competition.  Thankfully our car was capable of completing a few timed laps, albeit slightly off the pace, in order to give us a time for the day.  After two days of competition, James finished 20th, and Robert finished 31st in a field of 38 cars.

More details about our impressions of the course and results after the jump.

SCCA Solo2 Nationals Warm-Up Event
By James Elterman (jelterman) @ 1:04 PM :: AutoX :: 0 Comments :: 1420 Views
We headed to Topeka, Kansas a few days early this year for an opportunity to warm up to the conditions that we will be competing on for the 2004 SCCA Solo2 Nationals.  The warm up event took place on the weekend before Nationals.  The warm up was conducted on the North course and they were using the same course from the 2003 SCCA Solo2 Nationals.  Both Robert and I drove this course last year in the rain.  It was refreshing to get a second chance to drive the course.  We had all dry runs, and after three a piece I was only .020 slower than the fastest Subaru Impreza STi.  A Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VIII was about a half second faster.  Overall the car felt very good and we are confident and excited about the start of the 2004 SCCA Solo2 Nationals.

We continued the tradition this year by going to the Central Illinois Region SCCA Labor Day autocross in Rantoul, Illinois.  This was our first opportunity to meet at an event with our sponsor, Nukabe Automotive.  Chad of Nukabe brought out their STi which sports nearly everything available from Cusco for the STi.  Fortunately I had an opportunity to drive it and I was extremely impressed.  I now have LSD envy.  In keeping with tradition, again this year I managed to bring home the Fastest Time of the Day: Indexed.

Event #9 was another great local event for us.  The potential for rain meant a low attendance of 96 entrants.  The Shimmy Sideways Team STi was again one of the fastest cars at the event.  James and Robert placed 1st and 2nd in class respectively.  James also earned 2nd on index behind Dan Marx in his Mini Cooper.  The really story of the day was Robert's excellent performance which earned him 4th on index; his highest index finish this year.  This was a repeat performance for Robert after his 4th place finish at Event #8.  This recent success has moved him up into 4th place in the overall index standings, and only 6 points out of third behind Richard Wiese.  With 3 more local events this season it will certainly be exciting.
